Jack Hinson is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. He holds
degrees from Mars Hill College, Wake Forest University and
Southeastern Seminary. He became Board Certified with the Association
of Professional Chaplains upon completion of studies at Dorothea Dix
Hospital, NC Baptist School of Pastoral Care and the Patrick B. Harris
Hospital. He served as pastor for seventeen years before becoming the
first full time chaplain at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC.
Jack believes that humor is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity.
“Chaplain Jack,” as he was affectionately known, brought God's gift of
humor to use in visiting patients at WestCare’s two hospitals,
hospice, and residents at the Mountain Trace Nursing Center for
fourteen years. He has held workshops on The Healing Power of Humor
for social workers and health care professionals in Bryson City,
Sylva, Waynesville and Asheville, NC. Under Chaplain Jack’s leadership
the chaplaincy program became the first in North Carolina to receive
accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Pastoral
Services.
Throughout his ministry, Jack was privileged to serve in a number of
international locations including a two-week preaching crusade in
Jamaica, volunteer missionary in Haiti, an archaeological dig in
Israel, interim pastor at the First International Baptist Church of
Copenhagen, Denmark and speaker at the tenth International Humor
Conference in Paris, France.
Since his retirement from the hospital in 2000, he has served as
interim pastor in six churches.
He and his wife, Pat, live in Waynesville, NC with their dog Willie.
